Yuyuan Garden Temple Area- Shanghai

Shanghai has been rapidly modernizing for over a decade. As skyscrapers and tall apartment buildings rise skyward, Shanghai's old neighborhoods and traditional lifestyles are being torn down. One tradtional area that has been wonderfully preserved is Yuyuan Garden and Temple Area. Several blocks full of elaborate, multi-storied buildings, shops, and temples create a small city from China's distant past. Hundreds of years ago, these spectacular buildings must have appeared as skyscrapers to most Chinese. Today, while not tall by modern standards, the buildings of Yuyuan are still quite arresting. With their upturned roofs, elaboratedly carved wooden trellises and balconies, multiple windows, and brown-red wood, they remain stunning examples of traditional Chinese architecture.
