La Mezquita - The Great Mosque of Cordoba, Spain

World Heritage Site, La Mezquita, was considered a great woder of the Medieval world. From its simple and austere outer walls, you'd never guess at its ornate interior which is graced with elaborately carved walls, doors and windows; a series of unique red-white striped stone arches; and 856 columns of precious stone, inclluding jasper, onyx, marble and granite. Built originally as a Muslim mosque in the 700s, La Mezquita was converted into a Christian Cathedral in the 16th century by King Ferdinand, who installed a complete Gothic chapel inside the main prayer hall.
